In Conceal me not, Aziza Shadenova explores the wooden screen as a site of dualities: protection and exposure, intimacy and display. Traditionally a shield from view, the screen also carries theatrical associations — a threshold where the body may be undressed, hidden yet not entirely unseen. Shadenova’s intervention punctures this surface with a sequence of laser-cut hands, evolving from an open palm to the circle of an “OK” sign. At its final stage, the gesture doubles as an aperture, inviting the hidden body not to be observed but to observe. The screen, once a device of concealment, thus becomes an instrument of empowerment. In shifting from shield to stage, Shadenova reflects on the fragile but potent journey between vulnerability and agency.
